Does the area you live in require that you make 2 - 3x the monthly rent in income in order to be a tenant?
This is a common practice where I live in Colorado, and has been in place since at least 2018. In my city, rent for a one bedroom apartment is in the area of $1,750 (my base rent before utilities and pet rent). My apartment complex requires that renters make 3x the monthly rent in income. So, that is $5,250/month in household income. For a single person working a minimum wage job in Colorado ($13.65/hr), they'd have to work 96 hours every week to even have the chance to live in this apartment. Sure, you can share a one bedroom with a partner. But you're not going to be allowed to share it with 1+ platonic roommates and renting an apartment with more bedrooms is going to quickly become even pricier.
Considering that BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and elderly individuals all tend to make less than their white cis male counterparts, that makes this practice discriminatory whether that was the intention or not. It is my firm opinion that it should be illegal.
However, I can only speak from my own experience. Is this a practice where you live? How long has this practice been in place? Please share your stories, so that I can share them as well. I will be working in my local area to do what I can to ban this practice. The more information I have on what it is like elsewhere in the USA and the world, the easier this will be.
Thank you.
